Blowing a flawless O is a subtle art. There is a bit of science, too. No smoker in the world has naturally perfected smoke rings with a hookah or any other smoking device without some effort. Everyone needs practice, and so would you. This stepwise guide can assist you through the entire process.
The Prerequisites for Smoke Rings
The hookah aside, you need the smoke to be of a particular quality to make proper rings that can linger for a while. Also, you must have a suitable environment for the smoke rings to form perfectly and float in the air gloriously.
Here are the prerequisites for smoke rings:
1. The shisha bowl must be adequately hot.
2. The hookah base should be filled with smoke.
3. The smoke should be voluminous and pleasant.
4. The room, space, or setting should not be windy.
5. The hose needs to be reasonably large.
6. The mouth tip should have a sizable bore.
6 Steps to Make Smoke Rings with Hookah
Each of the following six steps is integral to making perfect smoke rings. You may have some success with one of the core elements amiss. However, try to tick all these checkboxes to make and blow the enviable Os consistently.
1. The Smoke
The smoke should be voluminous, neither too dense nor light. A little smoke is no good. A lot of smoke is unmanageable after inhaling. You must strike a fine balance before you can try the next steps.
There are a few ways to ensure you have the right smoke quality. Some people use ice or cool water to make the smoke dense and milky. This tactic is not necessary if you have packed the shisha bowl well and it is sufficiently hot, thus generating copious smoke.
Don’t attempt to make smoke rings immediately after lighting the coals and placing them on the foil or in the heat management device. Let the entire tobacco stuffed in the bowl warm up gradually and get evenly heated.
Take several puffs, and then allow some smoke buildup in the base. The smoke’s sustained exposure to the water in the base will cool it and make your inhale much more pleasant. That is when you will effortlessly draw some voluminous smoke with every puff.
2. The Inhale
Don’t inhale a lot of smoke because you won’t be able to manage it with your throat, tongue, and lips. If you do inhale more than necessary for a smoke ring, blow a little out and hold the rest in.
Do not inhale the smoke deep into your lungs. Keep the smoke in your mouth. Deeply inhaled or swallowed smoke will not form the O rings when exhaled. The smoke will be filtered further as it travels down your airways. The density will change, too.
3. The Lips
No matter how you inhale, your lips should be pursed when you have taken in the puff. Now, you must pout and make an oval shape with your lips before exhaling.
Ideally, your upper and lower lips should form an O to facilitate the formation of the ring as you blow the smoke out. However, not everyone is capable of making a perfect circle or oval shape with their lips.
Minor shape mismatch is not a significant issue as the internal tubular form of your lips will facilitate the smoke ring, not the exact shape of the exterior contour.
4. The Tongue
The lips are one part of the whole equation. The tongue plays a vital role, too. Your tongue must rest at the floor of your mouth, flat and parallel to the lower lip.
Do not curl or fold your tongue into any shape. It is futile to try any circular or curvy positioning of the tongue because it does not facilitate the formation of the smoke ring.
5. The Throat
The penultimate element is your throat. The throat is where most of the smoke will rest after you draw a puff, but neither inhale deep into the lungs nor swallow through your food pipe or esophagus.
You have to work on your throat to create an act of mild coughing. Almost all of us are familiar with suppressed coughs, the kind where it is voluntarily controlled or there is very little throat action involved.
This gentle and subtle cough is what will push a bit of the smoke from your throat through the pouting lips and make the ring.
6. The Exhale
Finally, exhale the smoke with a controlled mild cough lasting a second or less. Keep your lips pouted and oval shaped when you exhale. Repeat the combined act. You will have one smoke ring after another.
